Product details
Protein skimmers are among the most important technical devices in a modern saltwater aquarium. Protein skimmers perform the important task of removing primarily organic waste products, in the form of uric acid, peptides, and protein compounds, from the water circulation before they can be converted into inorganic substances (e.g., nitrogen, nitrate) through biodegradation processes. Saltwater aquariums are constantly enriched with protein compounds from food, organic waste products, and dead algae. Since a large portion of these compounds are degraded through nitrification, which occurs faster than denitrification, nitrate buildup occurs in the aquarium when there is a high pollution load. The protein skimmer removes proteins (protein compounds) from the water before they can be broken down by bacteria. This reduces the increase in nitrate, thus lightening and clarifying the aquarium water. A protein skimmer works by allowing electrically charged protein molecules to attach to air bubbles and be removed as foam (in the collection cup, the foam appears as a brown liquid, called adsorbate). Since a protein skimmer removes not only organic waste from the aquarium, but also substances important to corals, such as amino acids, the power of this protein skimmer should be adjusted carefully without overpowering it.
Cube Skimmers are ultra-compact conical protein skimmers with exceptional performance. Cube Skimmers operate on the countercurrent principle. This system, in which air and water flow in countercurrent, is the most effective skimming method. The modified skimmer pumps (impeller dispersion principle) allow for an extremely fine bubbling air-water mixture, resulting in extremely efficient skimming performance. The Cube Skimmer’s conical design, combined with the effective air distribution chamber that reduces turbulence, produces an excellent fine foam pattern while simultaneously reducing the formation of floating debris. With all Cube Skimmers, the skimmer compartment’s water level can be precisely adjusted using an adjustment screw, thus perfectly matching the water level of the filter tank or sump filter. The Cube Skimmer CS500 / 900 / 1500 models feature electronically controlled, stepless skimmer pumps, which can be adjusted at any time depending on the aquarium’s contamination level. The 6-pole, synchronized brushless motors (Brushless Technology) used are extremely quiet and, thanks to their different performance levels, can be optimally adapted to the aquarium’s needs. The use of ceramic shafts and ceramic bearings increases the lifespan of the pumps and motors, ensures exceptionally quiet operation, and prevents rust from saltwater.
Cube Skimmers are not suitable for external connections to a filter tank or sump filter. Cube Skimmers can be placed directly into the filter tank or sump filter.
